New site: Phaseolus polytene chromosomes

On my new site Phaseolus polytene chromosomes I present a summary of the results on my PhD thesis from 1998. It contains the protocols for chromosome preparation, pretreatment, fluorochrome stainging, as well as the karyogramm, idiogramm, chromosome description including chromosome length measurements of the polytene chromosomes of Phaseolus coccineus.

Especially interesting might be the page Chromosomes A-K. Due to the use of Ajax on this page, the comparison/switch between the different chromosomes is very fast. Check out also the lens icons, which are collapsing additional information.

There is also additional unpublished image material. The image gallery contains several photos for each single chromosome. This is to demonstrate the variety in morphology which makes the identification of this chromosomes so difficult.

A new, interesting social network platform for Scientists. Basic social functions, but solid and consistent. Stay tuned, they are improving day by day. It seems very promising.

www.MYourScience.com - Site Closed

An experiment has ended. The project “MYourScience” (www.MYourScience.com) is closed. Thanks to the 16 scientists who participated in the site and filling their profiles with name and interested fields from Jun-2007 to Jun-2008.

Results and discussion: Not one of the users of the site has ever posted any kind of content (excluding the maintainer). Conclusion: Either the functions of the site was not attractive (blog, forum, publication list) or not easy-to-use, or there is a lack of interest.

Rewrite 2007 of my home page

During the christmas holidays I took some time to rewrite my home page in order to enable multiple languages, the integration of dynamic content, and a more flexible and easy maintenance.

Even those I liked a lot, the old cover image from my PhD thesis left place to a short self-presentation. Firstly, because it is more informative than just an image and, secondly, it makes more clear that I switched my profession from a biologist to a software developer (mainly for databases and the web).
